February 5, 2009 - If I stay at a hotel near London Heathrow Airport (I am getting very good deals there) and want to go to London downtown by the tube, how much time would it take? I plan to stay for 4nights. I will be travelling with my wife and 2 kids.

you should be able to get from the hotel to central London in under an hour, depending on how long it takes to get from the hotel to the underground station, and also on which station in central London you re aiming to get to the underground map is at http www.tfl.gov.uk assets downloads standard tube map.pdf and the cost of tickets, etc is at http www.londontoolkit.com briefing travelcard.htm to get into central London you would need a Zone 1 6 travelcard, so that would be A 42.40 per adult for a three day travelcard ... children under 16 travel free, although if the children are teenagers they re going to need a photocard see info on the page above, and also on the London Transport website www.tfl.gov.uk
- The Piccadilly Line should take you from Heathrow to Piccadilly Circus in approx 40 minutes, give or take 10 minutes depending on the time of day. Go to www.visitlondon.com
You may need a bus to get to the tube, it might be better to get a bus to Hounslow West. To central London about 45 mins. A one day travel card is about A 7.50, a 3 day card is A 21.20 adult and A 6 child for unlimited bus and tube travel after 9.30am, you have to get the card before travelling.
I have stayed at London Heathrow 3 different times, and each time I swear that I will never do it again. You may get a good rate on a room, but there are no options to eat and go to a bar, and they gouge you. The free bus that goes from the hotels to the airport is agonizingly slow. It is not at all uncommon for the bus ride to take longer than the underground from the airport to downtown. It will take you so long to get back to your hotel, that you will try to stay out in the city for 12 hour trips. By the end of the four days you and your kids will be exhausted. It would make much more sense to look for a budget hotel in the Earl s Court region. That way you can be downtown in 15 to 20 minutes on the underground. If you get tired mid day you can easily return to your room for an hour or two for a little break. Buy oyster cards for the family. You can find a lot of inexpensive options around Earl s Court to feed your family. Don t do it.
You have 2 choices from Heathrow. Either you can take the Heathrow Express www.heathrowexpress.com which takes 15 minutes every 15 minutes into Paddington and then you can taxi or tube from there. You can also get the Piccadilly Line tube for a cheaper option which will take just under an hour. You can also get rail from Terminal 5 http www.terminal5.ba.com en to and from terminal 5 rail

i am heading over to london in 3 weeks and looking for a decent hotel close to all the sites london eye, tower of london, madam tusauds etc. and also easy to get to from heathrow! anyone any suggestions. 3 and 4 star hotels!. the strand palace is really nice.
